From asparagus to zucchini, the 1980 Vegetable Directory from the Virginia [Department of Agriculture 'and Consumer Services has it all. The listings of farms which offer pick-your-own or fresh-picked vegetables have doubled since last year when the program was initiated.
The directory now includes 38 farms throughout the state offering local fresh vegetables, along with a map, directions and approximate harvest dates.
Free copies of the 1980 Vegetable Directory may be obtained by writing Vegetables, VDACS, 203 North Governor Street, Richmond, VA 23219, or by calling Ron Whitehead, VDACS direct marketing agent, at (804) 786-3951. Sending a stamped, selfaddressed envelope will speed delivery.
Consumers can begin picking in some regions around the middle of May when spring peas, onions, asparagus and greens will start coming in. The harvest should continue into fall with such favorites as pumpkins and Indian corn. Many farms will have a large selection of vegetables until first frost.
