The tragedy apparently grew out of a dispute that occurred when both men were still teenagers. According to reports, Jimmy Hitt got into some sort of legal trouble when he was 17 and blamed Glenn Hitt for his difficulties. Thompson said this old feud apparently began to fester, according to Mrs. Jimmy Hitt, after her husband sustained an injury that resulted in his being laid off from work and sent him into a depression.
No charges have been filed in the May 17 shooting, Thompson said, adding that the investigation is continuing.
Funeral services for James Franklin Hitt were held at Clore Funeral Home in Culpeper at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, May 21, with Rev. W. W. Martin officiating. Interment was at Fairview Cemetery.
Hitt is survived by his wife, Mrs. Frances Ann Estes Hitt of Fredericksburg; two daughters. Miss Robin Lynn Hitt of Fredericksburg and Mrs. Wanda Lee Carpenter of Rixeyville, and two grandchildren.
