On May 7 and 8, students at Rappahannock County High School were evacuated from the building when pressure build-up in the school’s boiler reached dangerous levels.
Last Tuesday, school board member Robert Eastham devoted his energies to fixing the blame for the near-accident. The safety of Rappahannock youngsters would have been much better served if he’d directed his efforts towards preventing a repeat of the incidents.
Juding from his questions and remarks at last week’s meeting, Eastham would like to see responsibility for the boiler mishap laid on the shoulders of the high school principal and the division superintendent.
Eastham pointedly asked superintendent William Bloomer if he had read a report submitted by Eastham last January in which he described the boiler operations at both schools as run on “hope and prayer.” In the same report, Eastham called for the immediate implementation of a maintenance and inspection program.
