When Jimmy reportedly reached for his right pocket, Glenn fired one shot, striking Jimmy Hitt in the leg. According to police, a loaded .22 caliber automatic pistol was found in Jimmy Hitt’s right pocket.
Thompson said the sheriffs department received a call from Mrs. Glenn Hitt at 6:30 reporting a "drunk man.-;rwith a gun." When Thompson reached the scene at approximately 6:45, he found Jimmy Hitt on the floor in the hallway. (During the time Thompson was enroute, the sheriffs department received two additional calls, one from Glenn Hitt and a second from Mrs. Jimmy Hitt.)
According to Thompson, Jimmy Hitt was alive but bleeding profusely when he arrived at the scene. A call was placed immediately to the Culpeper dispatcher who notified the Castleton rescue squad, Thompson reported. In the meantime, the deputy said, state trooper C. A. Moore applied pressure to the wound in an attempt to stop the bleeding.
“I talked to Mr. Jimmy Hitt and asked him what happened. He said he was shot,” Thompson reported. “We did what we could but there wasn’t much we could do. We just had to wait for the ambulance,” the deputy added.
