In preliminary hearings held June 24, district court judge John Alexander certified James Franklin Williams on arson charges and Glenn Hitt on charges of first degree murder to the grand jury.

Hitt is accused of unlawfully and feloniously killing James Franklin Hitt of Fredericksburg in a shooting incident that occured on May 17 in the Scrabble area.

Rappahannock sheriffs department deputy E. W. Thompson III testified that he received a call at approximately 6:30 p.m. on May 17 reporting a drunk man with a gun and drove to the Hitt residence to be met by Glenn Hitt carrying a shotgun. According to the ‘ deputy. Hitt said Jie'd shot a man.

Thompson told the court that he called for an ambulance and then entered the rear door of the residence to find James Franklin Hitt lying on the floor in “an extreme amount of blood” approximately 20 feet or further into the house.
