Rappahannock News Staff Writer The cosmetic surgery is finished, the bandages have come off and the operation leaving Washington with a new look for its town square is an unqualified success.
Dr. Werner Krebser supervised the face lift on the old building that once housed Merrill’s Garage and Ford dealership, turning the worn and dilapidated structure into shiny new quarters for Nature’s Foods. Hayseed Antiques, the Beauty Box and photographer Pali Carolyn Delevitt.
Krebser, who with' his partner Dr. Jerry Martin, staffs the Rappahannock Medical Center, said he was inspired in his restoration efforts by work at the Clopton House, The Inn at Little Washington, and the Country Store. None of the structures facing on Washington Square had worn gracefully. Like Merrill’s Garage, all were entering the old age of construction with embarrassment rather than dignity until a refurbishing campaign gave them a new lease on life.
"Hopefully, this will all have a rippling effect on the business property owners throughout the town.” said the doctor. "Washington is such a beautiful little town but we’re not going to win in the long run unless we establish some criteria,” he added, suggesting that a strong sign ordinance and the establishment of an architectural review board be considered.
Krebser's remodeled building has provided two town businesses with room to expand and encouraged two new enterprises to locate in Washington.
