“Some volcanoes in the past have been much bigger than nuclear explosions," Donn explained. “They’re almost always at least equal to a killer-type of nuclear blast."
A Big One
The scientists concluded that Mount St. Helens’ eruption was indeed a big boom, bigger than most bombs that have been detonated by the United States and the Soviet Union. The energy it released compared precisely to a U. S. hydrogen bomb test on Bikini Island in the Pacific in 1954.
