The Safety Service Patrol of the Virginia Department of Highways and Transportation will travel some 260 miles of the state's interstate system during peak periods of the July Fourth weekend to assist motorists whose vehicles become disabled.
The specially-equipped pickup trucks will operate from 4:30 p.m. to midnight Thursday (July 3). 8 a.m. to 6
p.m. Friday (July "A),^nd noon to midnight Sunday (July 6), according to C. O. Leigh, the department’s maintenance engineer.
The trucks will carry signs designating their function and will be equipped with safety flares and flags, traffic cones, fire extinguishers, water, and other emergency supplies. Two- way radios will provide contact through base stations with police, rescue squads, and other emergency services.
Roads to be covered include Interstate 95 between Northern Virginia and Prince George County. Interstate 64 between Richmond and Norfolk. Interstate 495 and Gainesville, and Interstate 81 between Dixie Caverns and US 229 at Cloverdale.
In addition to the special holiday coverage, the department’s daily patrol of 1-495 and a segment of the Shirley Highway (1-395) in Northern Virginia will remain in operation on a 24hour basis.
