painted Japanese book illustrations, known as EHon, that were a popular art form before wood-block prints.
The large ToulouseLautrec posters in the exhibit were found folded up in an envolope in the model stand at Belmont. They are fine examples of that artist’s flair for color and bold forms. These posters were used as advertisements in Paris in their day and were published in great numbers and a wide variety. Many of them were carelessly discarded after use and those remaining today have become sought after as collectors items.
The French steel engravings to be exhibited are part of a larger collection of these prints at Belmont.
Included in the prints to be shown are two scenes from the American Revolution, commemorating the landing of Royal troops at New York.
The special exhibit will be open daily from 1-4 p.m. except Tuesday and Thursday. Arrangements for group tours for any day can be made by calling Belmont at 373-3634. Admission is charged.
