Thompson recalled that he had to turn on his headlights during the drive to the scene. Called to the stand. Clara Renzie testified that Williams had put out the fires on the outside of the house while her son doused the flames on the inside. Williams’ attorney Sharon Genebach Luke moved to have the arson charges dismissed on the grounds that the state hadn’t proved the incident occurred at night as the law requires. In addition. she argued that evidence indicated only that burn marks and blistering had been found, not that the building was consumed by fire.
Commonwealth's attorney Douglas Baumgardner countered that it is illegal to maliciously set fire to anything and that daytime burning is also a felony.
Tuesday’s hearing. Judge Alexander noted, was only to determine probable cause, not to adjudicate the degree of proof. “The jury may well find something other than burning in the night time but I do find probable cause.” Alexandter said, certifying the arson charges to the grand jury.
Tennis Finals
Victors in the weekend singles tennis finals held at the Huntly court of Dr. and Mrs. Werner Krebser were Rod Kirkpatrick and Jean Lillard. both of Flint Hill.
Kirkpatrick took the match 6-3 and 6-0 over Johnny Baumgardner of Flint Hill and Lillard challenged Diane Bruce of Washington with 6-4 and 6-4 sets.
Kirkpatrick advanced to the finals by defeating David Crump 6-0, 6-2 and Mike Connifey 6-2, 6-2. Johnny Baumgardner topped Tom Massie 6-0. 6-1; Bobby Gehringer 6-1. 6-2 and Bemie Dahlgren 6-2, 6-3.
Jean Lillard advanced to the finals over Margie Exton 6-1, 6-2 and Lois Manookin 6-4, 6-0, before meeting Bruce.
