Witold Kuncewicz's proposal to allow tanning of light leathers as a use by right on industrial zoned property ran into opposition at the planning commission’s January 21 public hearing.
The original amendment considered by the commissioners at Wednesday’s meeting would have permitted tanning of light leathers, defined as weighing under 25 pounds before processing.
Before the vote, however, Kuncewicz agreed to changes, dropping the weight limit to 15 pounds and substituting reptile and fish skins for light leathers. In addition, the revised amendment stipulated that tanning of fish and reptile skins would be allowed in an industrial zone only if there is no adverse effect from odor, glare, smoke, dust, vibration, noise or contamination of water, air and land.
But even with these conditions, the vote to recommended that the supervisors adopt the proposed amendment ended in a tie with Newbill Miller, Dave Fannon and chairman Herbert Barksdale in favor of permitting the tannery and Charles K. Estes, Allen Stokes and David Thornhill against.
