Odor and pollution problems associated with tanneries stem from long established businesses “who haven’t woke up to the fact” that they can no longer dump effluent ladened with chemicals into rivers and sewers, Kuncewicz said. These old businesses have neither the will nor often the space to make adjustments to eliminate odor and pollution, he said. “We’re starting from scratch. We’ve budgeted a considerable amount for settling tanks and monitoring because we know we have to be clean,” Kuncewicz assured the commissioners.
If all the chemicals mixed with the water in the tanning process are removed, Newbill Miller asked, why can’t the same 3,000 gallons required daily be used over and over again? Reusing the water isn’t practical, Kuncewicz said, because it would necessitate installing expensive underground storage tanks.
