A project by first graders in the gifted and talented program decorates the cafeteria wall. All the kids contributed sketches and, using the art work as a starting point, each came up with a line for a story. Laurie typed the story and the youngsters went back to the drawing board to finish detailed illustrations that they painted with water colors, attached the story line underneath and hung it in the cafeteria.

Disciplines Combined

Contained in one of the drawings is a math problem the kids worked on, Laurie noted. "I like to combine disciplines as much as possible,’’ she said. “For instance, when wc /ere doing paintings of the planets, one of the kids noticed that her paint brush sucked up the excess water on the picture. That gave us an opening for a lesson on capillary action and from there, we went on to how trees absorb water
