By Permit Instead Miller raised the possibility of allowing a light tannery as a special permitted use, rather than a use allowed by right, in an industrial zone. With this approach, he said, the board of zoning appeals can attach conditions which would allay fears about the impact of the tannery on water and air quality. Miller added, however, that he wanted to avoid “running Mr. Kuncewicz around the block” with time consuming permit procedures.
Commonwealth’s attorney Douglas Baumgardner agreed that allowing tanneries as a special permitted use was "a better way to go...for the soundness of the (zoning ordinance) document we're working with.”
According to Fauquier’s professional planner Dick McNear who was at Wednesday’s meeting to discuss the upcoming zoning ordinance review with the commissioners, controls in the ordinance’s Article 13 on environmental damage already apply to every zoning district in the bounty. '
