Now wait a minute, interrupted Bob Treanor. “We’ve got a name. We’re the Sperryvilte Spuds,” he announced with great dignity and a little bow, giving Wood an attack of the giggles.
“It didn’t stick,” Hudson corrected. “Actually, we’re the Nethers Nerds,” he added, sparking a debate over whether “nerd” is spelled with an "e” or with a “u”.
“That’s right—Ranger Bill and the Nethers Nerds,” Wood laughed.
They’re not the nerds from Nethers but Hudson is a ranger, working for the Park Service on assignment in Shenandoah National Park for the past two years. It was on the job that he met Wood .who}«W bird watching in the park. The two struck up a conversation and it came out that Wood played the hammer dulcimer and loved old timey music. They’ve been getting together once in a while to play a tune or two ever since.
“There are very few people in Rappahannock County who play our kind of music,” Wood noted.
“Most of the folks here are rock ‘n’ rollers,” Treanor added, shaking his head in mock disgust.
