When, during the course of the three month long investigation, it became apparent that wildlife was being transported across state lines for sale in violation of the Lacey Act, agents of the United States Fish and Wildlife Service were invited to participate in the investigation.
The operation involved a number of Virginia undercover game wardens engaged in hazardous undercover work, working in remote areas, in cities, at night, frequently in potentially dangerous situations. In addition to the wildlife violations uncovered, at least one charge of illegal possession of narcotics resulted from this investigation.
Undercover intelligence gathering activities and investigations are regularly conducted by undercover game wardens of the Virginia Game Commission, operating statewide. These illegal commercial operations were discovered as a result of such intelligence gathering activities by undercover wardens operating in Northern Virginia, which led to the arrest of large scale buyers and supplier* of game species that were being sold through a number of retail market outlets.
