The skins will be packed in small boxes and then brought down to minus five degrees in a blast freezer. “Then they become, for all intents and purposes, a block of ice,” Kuncewicz said. Next the boxed skins will be shipped in a refrigerated truck at zero degrees to Sperryville where they will be stored in the tannerv freezer until processed.
Kuncewicz acknowledged that tanneries carry “a very bad connotation” as pollutors of air and water. For this reason, he said, he thoroughly investigated possibilities for environmental damage involved with tanning fish skins “to see if it was something we could do economically and cleanly by ourselves.”
