Laurie Marshall is working to open windows on a wider world for school children in Rappahannock’s program for the gifted and talented.
Expanded from a few afternoon classes last year, the program now encompasses 121 students from first graders to high school seniors who meet with Laurie several times a week. “I’ve been overwhelmed by designing a curriculum and teaching at all these different grades,” she admitted.
But despite the load, she loves her job. It shows in story after story she tells, punctuated with smiles and chuckles, of the funny, cute or clever things her young charges have come up with this week. It shows in the photographs of the kids, the anecdotes and scraps of conversation she includes in a journal she’s kept since the beginning of her involvement with the gifted and talented program. It shows in the attention she’s lavished on setting up a curriculum that responds to the interests of each individual youngster.
And it’s reflected in the affection and respect the kids return to her.
