Laurie is also trying to increase community involvement with the schools, pairing up people with expertise in a particular area to kids who have interests in that same area. As a start in this mentor approach, a feature of many gifted and talented programs elsewhere, she’s working on establishing connections between a youngster interested in geology and a woman from Culpeper who conducts archeological digs in the area. “Transportation’s a big problem so nothing is finalized yet,” she added.
In the meantime while she’s waiting to send students out into the community, she’s brought the community into the schools. Washington lawyer Peter Luke and Rappahannock deputy John Godlewski have spoken to the youngsters in the gifted and talented program. “John gave the kids some 'wonderful advice. He told them that the two most important things he’s learned as a policeman are to know your limits and to get help „yhen you need it.”
