“She’s really neat!” is the way one tenth grader described the teacher for the new gifted and talented program. "She tries to reach us through both levels—adult and kid. She makes kids proud of what they can do. She encourages them and that makes them feel proud,” another student explained.
“Her program adds a little bit of spark to an ordinary school day. It’s a place and time to hone your talents,” commented one talented youngster not known for his devotion to academics. “And the school newspaper is a great idea. It’s going to be the school’s way of expressing itself.”
“She’s interested in anything you want to talk about,” a ninth grader concluded.
Still Evolving
Curriculum for the gifted and talented program is still in the evolutionary process with Laurie making adjustments to include more mathematics and science. “The first three months 1 spent with the kids, we explored individual projects, primarily for me to determine their individual interests," she explained.
