Kuncewicz maintained that frozen fish skins will create no smell at all. Neither will the tanned fish skins, he added. The fish scales, described by Kuncewicz as “beautiful, clean things,” are 99.9 per cent pure protein and will be sold for processing. He agreed to revising the proposed ordinance amendment to allow processing of fish and reptiles in place of light leathers and invited anyone concerned about pollutants entering the Thornton River to check the water in the tannery’s settling tanks for PH and salt content.
“I don’t think PH is the issue,” countered Martin Woodard, stating his opposition to the proposed amendment arising from concern with chromium and formic acid used in tanning.
Worrell replied that formic is a “very weak organic acid,” one-tenth to onetwentieth the strength of acid used in high school chemistry classes.
Leake said he wasn’t opposed to allowing tanneries by right under the old juice plant’s industrial zoning but only as long as Kuncewicz “does what he says he’s going to do” and processes only non-fur bearing skins.
