Rappahannock Hunt’s annual point-to-point races, not the arrival of robins, is the county's traditional sign that spring is finally on its way.
Scheduled this year for Saturday. March 7. the races offer a full day of steeplechasing and picnics at Thornton Hill Farm. I Vi miles south of Sperryville on Route 522.
Virginia's finest steeplechasers are entered in nine exciting timber and hurdle races that get underway at 11 am.
Point-to-point races derive from fox hunting and today are organized and run by local hunt clubs. As the name implies, they began as cross country racing from church steeple to steeple and originated as a means of settling arguments between hunt club members over whose horse was the best. These sometimes hurly burly affairs gradually evolved into today's Jockey Club sanctioned race meets. It is not quite like the old days but spectators now have an unimpeded view and enjoy it more.
