Large chunks of money went to increasing state employees’ pay raises next year from 4.5 percent to 9 percent, while basic school aid to localities was increased from Gov. Dalton's suggested $1,099 per pupil to $1,185, taking some tax burden for education off hard-pressed local governments.
Among items of local interest, airport promotion funding, almost all of it for Dulles International Airport, received $100,000 in the approved budget, down from the original request for more than $300,000. George Mason University received money to complete its circumferential road and to extend water and sewer lines to the portion of the campus still undeveloped.
Brucellosis Indemnities
Efforts to combat brucellosis, a disease that causes infertility in cattle, will get a boost from $75,000 for indemnities to farmers who lose cattle to the disease and $200,000 for a vaccination program.
