HOW TO DIE IN AFIRE In order of frequency the five ways that fire kills are 1. Asphyxiation: Just lowering the oxygen content of air from 20% to 16% confuses thinking, at 6% breathing stops. 2. Hot Air: Home fires generate air blasts of 1,000° which can travel far ahead of actual flames and kill in seconds. 3. Smoke: Blocks visibility and contains carbon monoxide, usually with other toxic products. 4. Toxic Products: A dozen are frequently present in smoke. In combination, their power to damage lungs, blind, and confuse is greatly increased. 5. Flames: The above factors usually do their work with little warning. Depending on advancing flames to give enough warning is one way to die in a fire.
