with a private pack of hounds in about 1920 and became a recognized hunt by the Masters of Foxhounds Association in 1950. With recognition came pointto point racing.

Point-to-point races over distances ranging from 1% to 3 miles, over timber fences, brush hurdles or flat ground. Owners, horses and riders frequently travel the race meet circuit, competing for trophies and ribbons. Some spend considerable sums for their mounts. But steeplechase races can also be won by a local farmer or rider with just a single horse.
While all point-to-point racing is considered amateur, some races are for the amateur’s amateur or especially for the enjoyment of the local crowd. Rappahannock features three such races. In the ‘‘Pair Races,” a team of two riders on hunting horses traverse three miles crossing streams and ditches, jumping coops, stone walls, and rail fences.
