Figures on taxable retail sales released by the Rappahannock-Rapidan Planning District Commission for 1980 show a slight increase for Rappahannock County. Measured by ‘‘taxable sales of retail goods and services” Rappahannock County increased from $6,450,553 in 1979 to $6,871,620 in 1980, an increase of $421,067 or 6.5 percent. This compares to an increase of $368,903 or 6.1 percent in 1979 when compared to 1978 figures.
The retail groups showing the largest dollar ($) increase in 1980 were General Merchandise ($212,827) and Food ($100,429). The biggest losers were Automotive down 11.7 percent and FurnitiireHome Furnishings down 4.1 percent. Overall, the number of businesses remained the same at 150 establishments.
