While both had an artistic bent, neither Merrill nor Phillip planned a career in crafts.
Phillip started out as an architectural student in the Rhode Island School of Design but quickly decided that he didn't want to spend the rest of his life building horizontal skyscrapers.
“I wandered down to the basement of the school and found this wonderful old Danish craftsman teaching woodworking,” Phillip recalled. Inspired by the old man’s magic with wood, he switched majors to furniture design.
