“You never know what's going to sell,” Merrill bemoaned. “Frogs went like hotcakes at the craft fair in Charlottesville so you make 500 for the show in Richmond. But in Richmond, everybody wanted fish—not a single frog sold." she added ruefully.
Merrill is still experimenting with her tiles. She hasn't gotten around yet to making up a before-andafter color chart and so she's never quite sure what the final product will look like. Between the original painting. the firing, glazing and refiring in her tiny kiln, hues brighten and shift dramatically.
