Phillip designs more than just fireplaces, tables and other “frames" for Merrill’s painted tiles. Recently, he fashioned a table out of marble from the Mexican Embassy for Hazel Fannon. “Custom work is one of the greatest services that a craftsman can provide. You can't go to Sears and get a frame for a piece of marble and you can’t go to Sears for a tile table top that doesn’t have any red in it,” he added.
The Stranges are optimistic that their joint operation will expand. With that in mind, Phillip is building a huge shop to replace his little basement work area. “We don’t know what's going to happen with our business but we just want to build it once. Besides, it's so nice to have a lot of room.” Phillip said.
“And if the business fails, we can' always use it to store old cars." Merrill concluded with a wide grin.
