Endangered Species
“If Mrs. Hawkins belongs to a minority group, then I’m an endangered species!” said elementary librarian Lucia Kilby who has been with the school system for 20 years.
“The turn-over in the elementary school was 38 percent last year and if you count new faces (personnel filling new positions), it was 42 percent," she said.
Supporting the proposed indexed pay scale with a 12.4 percent cost of living increase as a means of keeping experienced teachers, Mrs. Kilby maintained that “the children will suffer” if the turnover trend isn’t stopped.
Describing herself as “new to teaching, new to special education and new to the county,” Dorie Brown, first year teacher for the elementary school’s combination learning disabled and emotionally disturbed class, added her support for the proposed position of coordinator of special education.
Brown said that at the beginning of the year, she found her job “quite overwhelming” and so sought help from the administration. She said she found the administrators very willing but lacking expertise in her field and maintained that a special education coordinator could provide help that
