For years hollies have been a favorite of gardeners for landscape use, their dark green leaves and bright red berries adding interest and color during the winter months when most shrubs and trees are letting the winter slip by as quickly as possible.
These same characteristics are tied so closely to the holiday season that a few sprigs of holly with their bright red berries can transform a pine wreath into a Christmas Wreath or an ordinary flower arrangement into one that says Merry Christmas!
There are four major groups of hollies: the English Holly. Ilex aquifolium, is a tree that will reach 30-50 feet in height. This holly, with its spiny leave* and red berries, is the one most frequently associated with Christmas.
American Holly, Ilex opaca, is found growing in the wild from Massachusetts to Florida and west to Missouri and Texas. It can reach a height of 40-70 feet.
