It is not yet clear whether he will support an increase in the gasoline tax. He indicated in an Oct. 12 interview that he would not favor using money from the general fund for highways, primarily because there will be an added strain on the budget as departments vie for shrinking funds.
He is waiting also for a report by the Joint Legislative Audit and Review Commission, which is studying the highway department will soon offer a report to the' General Assembly, before making further recommendations.
In his energy plan, Mr. Robb called for a state energy policy to outline conventional and alternative energy sources, as well as energy resources. He has called coal the “cornerstone” of Virginia’s energy policy, and has proposed a number of recommendations for improved utilization of coal resources.
To conserve energy, Mr. Robb supports the 55 mile per hour speed limit, completion of the full 100 miles of the Metro System in Northern Virginia, and he says he will require that all state vehicles meet a 25miles-per-gallon standard of efficiency.
