This ceremony was repeated in 1623 by proclamation of Governor Bradford and then again in 1633 for all those in the Massachusetts Bay Colony.
Shortly after the Revolutionary War, a national proclamation of Thanksgiving was made, this time again for peace. President Lincoln issued a similar proclamation at the end of the War Between the States, and in later years the proclamation was made annually by the governors of all states for the fourth Thursday in November.
Franklin Roosevelt tried to change Thanksgiving to the third Thursday in November so that the Christmas season could officially start earlier, but he was not successful. In 1941, Congress declared Thanksgiving as a national holiday to be celebrated each year on the fourth Thursday in November.
