To the editor:
I recently had the harrowing experience of losing my purse in the town of Washington, Virginia. My first instinct was to retrace my steps of the previous evening, which I did to no avail. Secondly, I inquired of Sheriff Buntin and all of the many others who would listen, to “keep an eye out.” Thirdly. I bemoaned the amount of information, identification cards, drivers’ license, money, photos, et al which 1 would now have to replace at great time and no little expense.
Two days later, a call from the Amissville post office told me my purse had been returned in the outdoor postal box. To whoever I owe this debt of gratitude, I may never know, but I thank you from the bottom of my heart.
The larger lesson is that in this time of nuclear buildings and nuclear reactors, murder in the streets, unemployment and recession, a simple faith in the goodness of human nature has been restored to me by a simple act of pure goodness. It makes me very glad to be here in Rappahannock County.
