Insects also were used to forecast winter. Everyone mentioned the wooly worms, but many have a different interpretation of their appearance. Some people said that the sign for bad winter is if there are a lot of the little worms crawling about. Others said that the thickness of his coat is the sign. Most that we talked to said it had to do with the stripe. The more black than
brown he is, or the wider the black stripe, the worse the winter. Or, if he’s black in front, the bad weather is to come; and if he’s black behind, the worst weather is past. If he’s brown at both ends and orange in the middle, the winter will be mild. The wooly worm was the most commonly mentioned sign, but the most confusing.
