A friendly ghost was the surprise attraction of this year’s Rappahannock house tour. According to reports, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Russell’s home. The Chimneys in Flint Hill, is visited by a spirit.
Doors inside the house swing open and shut without any hint of a breeze. Floors creak in a candence that suggests ghostly footsteps. A television set turns itself on and off to the puzzlement of electricians who have checked the TV and the outlet it’s plugged into and found nothing wrong with the wiring in either.
The strongest clue that points to a haunting involves the Russells’ little dog. Not ordinarily a barker at shadows, he sits in front of a large, comfortable—and empty—chair in the living room and barks and growls with his hackles standing on end. This strange canine behavior stops as suddenly as it starts and the little dog walks away from the chair to curl up for a nap in the comer.
