Mrs. Meserve bred these outstanding hollies by crossing the little known, but very hardy Prostate Holly, Ilex rugosa with the English Holly, I. aquifolium, known for its handsome foliage.
, T^e result is offlciaHy known as ttex x meserveae. The cultivars are Blue Angel, Blue Maid. Blue Princess, Blue Prince and Blue Stallion.
Blue Angel is the slowest growing, most compact member of the group, eventually reaching a height of six to eight feet if left untrimmed.
Its glossy, blue-green foliage is crinkled and turns a deep-bluish purple with the arrival of winter. The scarlet berries are large.
