Virginia’s House of Delegates rejected a redistricting proposal on Monday that would have created 100 single member House districts and would have put Rappahannock County in a district with Fauquier County and portions of Culpeper and Spotsylvania counties.
The House rejected by a 57-37 vote the proposal from Del. James S. Christian, Jr., (D-Richmond) to develop a single member district plan, an approach which received strqng support last Monday in a public hearing before the House Privileges and Elections Committee.
Del. Raymond R. “Andy" Guest, (R-Frorit Royal) who was elected in November to represent Clarke, Page, Rappahannock and Warren Counties, supported Christian's proposal. Guest said there was a “50-50 chance" that the committee's plan would be rejected by federal court because of excessive population deviations and other reasons. The House is scheduled to vote on the committee’s plan Tuesday.
