Many times problems that are present in the body will manifest themselves first in the foot. A certain pain or discoloration may not be a localized problem, but may be a problem that is affecting the entire body and showing itself in the foot. Since the foot takes more stress than many other areas of the body it is prone to more physical injury. A non-healing sore on the foot could be an indication of diabetes or vascular disease. A rash on the foot may not be a fungus infection (athlete's foot) but may be a sign cf diabetes, vascular insufficiency, a generalized infection or other systemic problems.
Many patients think gout affects only the foot; however, it also has a strong effect on the kidneys and other joints. Rheumatoid arthritis and other arthritic diseases may start with a swollen joint in the foot.
