And Linda Heimstra is committed to a career in the arts. “I’ve been an artist ever since I was a little kid. I remember when I was in first grade and the teacher told us to copy a book cover. I thought mine was so good. I was real proud." The feeling of pride that comes from the creation of beauty has never left Linda. It’s the motor behind her career drive.
Her father’s assignment with the Air Force in Japan gave the little seven year old artist a golden start when she was able to take private lessons from a Japanese instructor. She continued art lessons as a teenager after her dad was transferred to the Washington, D.C. area, taking oil painting classes from a teacher who Linda remembers as “a crazy French wqman.” The lessons continued until Linda was 17. "She was really good. She taught me a lot. It helps to have people show you what to do and she did that.”
“For ever and ever” in school. Linda earned straight A’s in art. Her record won her the job of art assistant at T.C. Williams High School in Alexandria during her junior year. Then her father was transferred again, this time to Biloxi. Mississippi, where Linda finished high school. The move was a turning point in her life. She wanted to go on to the Rhode Island School of Design after graduation but her father insisted she stay close to the
