"By avoiding these violations of safety rules," the specialist said, "the safe hunter can reduce his probability of causing an accident by 15 percent.”
Only 29 accidents during the period could be traced to mechanical failure of firearms.
“Even here, the safe hunter is so familiar with the normal operation of his firearm that he will take corrective action at the slightest sign of malfunction,” Bromley said.
Approximately 10 percent of the hunting accidents were due to unusual or unknown causes and were not analyzed.
Bromley concluded by observing that the risks involved in hunting can be reduced greatly if the hunter pays conscientious attention to target identification and background safety before shooting, develops the necessary skills needed in handling and moving in the field with firearms, and is committed to legal, safe handling of firearms.
