The Piedmont Environmental Council Board of Directors voted at its December meeting to activate the Piedmont Land Revolving Fund, which PEC describes as “a bold new tool for preserving the landscape of Piedmont Virginia.” A drive is underway to raise an initial $500,000 with which to commence operations.
The purpose of the Fund is to purchase key Piedmont tracts threatened with conversion to unsuitable uses, and to resell those properties to private parties after easements or covenants have been placed on them. The primary focus of the Fund will be the preservation of farmland in strategic areas.
Already, PEC has received $100,000 for the Fund. Additional sizeable grants are being solicited.
