didn’t materialize, she tried house painting for wealthy customers in the city, painstakingly adding intricate designs and little tiny stripes to trim work.” It turned out that I was real good at it. The interior decorator I worked for hired me to paint an antique secretary. Then I got a bunch of sign painting jobs, some for the Black Kettle and for Faith Mountain where I did the lettering on all the little inside signs.”
But painting signs just didn’t bring in a steady income and the steady income from painting trim for rich folks in the city wasn’t worth the trauma of commuting to D.C. so Linda decided to branch out even further.
For a while she tried silk screening colorful Rappahannock T-shirts, the original shirt-front publicity for the county. "It was frustrating work to print on fabric because it moves. It drove me crazy! But it sure was nice to see people walking around with my shirts on,” she admitted with a chuckle.
Then she and her friend Bill Abernathy stumbled on a book of hex signs at the Sperryville Emporium. With her Dutch background, the colorful designs struck a responsive chord in Linda. What better craft could there be for this agriculturally oriented community than replicas of the bright hex signs that hang from the barns and farm houses throughout Pennsylvania?
