Early reports indicate that Virginia’s private woodland owners are once again among the leaders in the Nation in forest tree planting for the 1980-81 planting season. Furthermore, the Virginia Division of Forestry tree nurseries produced a record number of seedlings which were sold to Virginia landowners. “All Virginians can and should share in the pride of this accomplishment,’’ said State Forester Wallace F. Custard.
Virginia’s total reforested acres on non-government land exceeded 83,940 acres during the winter and spring planting season of 1980-81. Although this is shy of the targeted one hundred thousand acres hoped for. Custard explained that the economy and the weather are partially responsible for the shortage.
