The season of winter settles on the northern hemisphere at 5:51 p.m., EST, on December 21 when the sun reaches the southernmost point in its annual journey—the winter solstice.
The word solstice, meaning “sun standing still,” has been used to describe those times that the sun’s north and south motion seems to momentarily stop. According to Dr. Paul H. Knappenberger Jr., Director of the Science Museum of Virginia, the ancients noticed that the shadows of a stick grew longer for half the year and at the time of winter solstice stopped growing.
