Rappahannock County has 11 children in foster care and most of these children are being' cared for by substitute \ parents in foster family a homes. The foster care * program in Rappahannock | County is administered by the Department of Public Welfare, which has legal custody of the children.
Throughout the State of Virginia, 8,183 children were in foster care in June 1981. with 5,571 of these children living in foster family homes. Realizing the importance of foster family care; a Study of the Foster Parents in Virginia was conducted by the Department of Welfare in conjunction with the Children’s Bureau of the Department of Health and Human Services and the Westat Research Corporation. Virginia was one of eight states selected in the Spring of 1980 by the Children's Bureau to participate in this third phase of the National Study of Social Services to Children and their Families.
This study, which asked the foster parents to assess themselves, obtained information on the recriytment. retention and role of the foster parent.
Major study findings were:
—Most foster parents felt they have good relationships with local welfare agencies.
—The main reason for becoming foster parents was the fulfillment of religious beliefs to do good deeds.
