The Virginia Division of Forestry tree nurseries located in Augusta and New Kent Counties produced 28 different species of tree seedlings for Virginia landowners. The 1980 production exceeded 53 million trees with the major species being loblolly pine. Virginia’s two state nurseries ranked fifth in the nation in forest tree seedling production.
The two Division of Forestry tree nurseries began harvesting (lifting) and planting tree seedlings on December 1 for the 1982 planting season. Tree planting crews are already at work and will continue planting throughout the winter and spring every day the ground is not frozen or covered with snow.
The Division of Forestry produces tree seedlings for sale to landowners at cost of production. Loblolly pine" sells for $14.00 per thousand seedlings, white pine is $30, Virginia Pine-$15 and the other available hardwood and softwood species vary from $14 to $175 per thousand. There are several species especially suitable for wildlife food and habitat improvement.
