family and attend a nearby community college, “I was really sick of Mississippi. I couldn’t stand staying in that state a minute more than I had to so I came back to Virginia as soon as 1 graduated.”
She found an Apartment in Alexandria and a job with the city processing the extra paper work that piled up on desks in the aftermath of hurricane Agnes.
Her plans for a future in art were relegated to daydream status as she concentrated on secretarial duties. Then an old friend from high school reintroduced her to Rappahannock. a place she’d visited while a student at T.C. Williams. It was a case of country love at first sight for the city girl. “I found this cabin right away. I’ve lived here for six years now,” Linda reported with the satisfaction of a military brat who spent a childhood packing up bag and baggage at least once every three years.
Tried Crafts
Once settled in, she started making the rounds of craft shows and realized that craftspeople were making money from their at-home labors. Linda decided to try sewing old fashioned reversible dolls, the kind with the full skirts and bonnets and a head at each end that were cherished by little girls of several generations ago. “But nobody bought them. I couldn’t get what they were worth so I gave them all away as presents,” she recalled.
