Typically, the first attack, of “farmer’s lung” is signaled by general discomfort with a splitting headache, pronounced shivering and a temperature which might rise to 103 degrees Fahrenheit.
Other symptoms include difficulty in breathing, watery eyes, itchy, runny nose, wheezing sounds when breathing, and itching up the middle of the back. “These symptoms usually occur suddenly, some six to eight hours after exposure to the dust of moldy hay or silage,” the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences faculty member said.
Perhaps the most characteristic symptom of the disease is shortness of breath.
