According to the Virginia Tech Extension specialist, “farmer’s lung” has been on the increase in recent years. “The reason we have seen more cases is a simple one,” Hetzel said. “Silos are bigger than they used to be. They average now between 24 and 30 feet in diameter, as compared to between 6 and 20 feet a few years ago.”
Because of their larger size, it takes a farmer longer to remove the moldy material from inside the silo. Exposure time is greater than in previous years.
“Virginia farmers need to be aware that ‘farmer’s lung’ really does exist and is a potential working hazard to them,” advised Hetzel. "Then they can take the necessary precautions to guard against the disease.” j
